Comparison of Fluoroquinolones and Other Antibiotic Prophylaxis Regimens for Preventing Complications in Patients Undergoing Transrectal Prostate Bio…

2022

Our study aimed to compare the incidence of infective complications after transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUSBx) when adopting different antimicrobial prophylaxis regimens. A multi-institutional cohort of 1150 patients who underwent TRUSBx was retrospectively analyzed. Procedures were performed between 2017 and 2019 (before and after the EMA warning about the use of fluoroquinolones for the antibiotic prophylaxis of patient candidates to TRUSBx). The primary endpoint was the occurrence of infective complications, including sepsis and/or fever. The population was stratified according to the antibiotic prophylaxis adopted: fluoroquinolones (levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, prulifl…

Serum levels of angiogenetic cancer biomarkers in men undergoing prostate biopsy. Preliminary data

2012

Background: The reduction of the number of negative prostate biopsies in patients with elevated serum PSA represents a major challenge. Several angiogenetic biomarkers are involved in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. The aim of our preliminary study was to investigate if their serum levels might be related to prostate cancer detection. Patients and Methods: Angiopoietin 2, Follistatin, G-CSF, HGF, IL-8, Leptin, PDGF- BB, PECAM-1, VEGF, PTH were the selected biomarkers for our research. They were measured by BioPlex immunoassay. As a preliminary step, consecutive unselected patients undergoing prostate biopsy for palpable prostate nodule and/or elevated PSA levels were entered. A 12-co…

Studio pilota sul valore predittivo dei livelli plasmatici di 9 fattori angiogenetici nella selezione di pazienti candidati alla biopsia prostatica

2013

To reduce the number of negative prostate biopsies in patients with elevated PSA serum levels represents a major challenge in urological oncology. Angiogenetic factors might be involved in initial stages of prostate cancer and might represent useful tools in patients' selection for prostate biopsy. The plasmatic levels of Angiopoietin-2, Follistatin, G-CSF, HGF, IL-8, Leptin, PDGF-BB, PECAM-1 and VEGF were measured by BioPlex immunoassay in patients undergoing prostate biopsy for palpable prostate nodule and/or elevated PSA levels (≥4 ng/mL). They were related with biopsy results. ROC curve analysis was exploited to test the diagnostic accuracy of each biomarker by AUC calculation. A potent…

Antibiotic prophylaxis in patients who had undergone to prostate biopsy in between the EMA warning era: effects of fluoroquinolones in diabetic and n…

2022

Abstract Purpose To investigate the effects of different antibiotic prophylaxis regimens in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) candidates to trans-rectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUSPB). Methods 143 outpatients with DM who underwent TRUSPB during the period 2018–2020 were selected from a cohort of 1150 patients in 3 different institutions. Exclusion criteria were allergies, concomitant anti-platelet therapies and uncontrolled DM. Different antibiotic prophylaxis regimens were adopted. Bacterial resistance levels to fluoroquinolones into the different communities were also collected. Univariable and multivariable binomial logistic regression analyses were used to assess the odds…

Can side-specific biopsy findings predict the side of nodal metastasis in clinically localized prostate cancer? Results from a multicenter prospectiv…

2013

Background To evaluate the correlation between the side of positive biopsy (Bx) and the risk of lymph-node metastases (LNMs) on each side and to quantify the risk of contralateral LNMs in patients with unilateral positive biopsy. Methods We analyzed the outcomes of 1599 patients with complete data regarding the sides of positive Bx and LN (lymph-node). By dividing each prostate into two separate sides, we assessed the accuracy of the side-specific Bx details in determining the side of positive nodes; the area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) (AUCs) was used. For patients with unilateral positive Bx, we assessed the risk of homolateral and contralateral LNMs according to the…
